OVERVIEW: UET‑1 is a Russian 533 mm electric heavyweight torpedo introduced in 2018 under the codename “Ichthyosaur.” It is designed for universal use—capable of engaging submarines and surface vessels.

DETAILS: The UET‑1 was developed by Dagdizel Plant JSC (Dagestan) and entered serial production after a 2018 contract to deliver 73 units by 2023. It replaces the older USET‑80 and features a brushless electric motor, digital acoustic homing, and wake-detection capabilities. It has a range of ~25 km, a top speed of ~50 kn, and a homing detection range of ~3.5 km; it can detect surface-ship wakes up to 500 s after they form. State trials completed in 2020–2021, and it officially entered service with the Russian Navy in January 2021.

FUNCTION: Launched from 533 mm submarine tubes, UET‑1 uses digital acoustic homing to seek subs and also detects and tracks surface-ship wakes, then detonates via magnetic influence or contact fuse. Its electric propulsion enables quiet operation and speed modulation.
